Nearly a generation of enslavement has left the two groups of humans divided- and the survivors on the surface harbor more than a little resentment to their counterparts that escaped. It'll take everything he has to unite everyone against their common enemy and retake the planet from the inside.
Meanwhile, light-years away, the forces on the ground are supported by a team working endlessly to keep a tenuous alliance with the Ahai, and keep the troops on the ground alive. With both teams working tirelessly toward bringing humanity home, they might just stand a chance.

This is a story that is at its core about the tenacity and resilience of the human spirit, even when faced with impossible odds. The story is compelling, but at times I found I wasn't as emotionally invested as I wanted to be (I realize that the fate of humanity was in question, but sometimes it wasn’t quite enough.) I just didn't connect with the characters the way I wanted to.
One thing that really made this book shine, and was definitely a highlight for me, was the battle scenes. They're well written, fast-paced and easy to follow. Thomas' military knowledge was readily apparent and it definitely enriched the story. The world-building was very well executed and at no points did i find myself lost. Especially great was how none of the species were treated like monoliths, despite having features that made them easily distinguishable.
What I particularly enjoyed was the ending. Don’t worry! No spoilers, but it was one of those endings that stuck with me and I’m still thinking about it. I really want to know what happens next. Overall, a very enjoyable read and I look forward to more books in the same universe.
If you’re into military fiction, and are a fan of science fiction, definitely give this one a read!
