So, I know I’m a little late with this, but I’ve been taking some solid relax time (yes, that does mean reading a lot and posting reviews). But I figure, am I even doing NaNoWriMo right if I don’t reflect on my April camp?
So, for those of your who don’t know, I did something a little different this month. I’m still struggling with editing Erut’s Choice, so I really wanted to get moving on that again. So, I set a goal to edit 150 pages. This would account for everything I had already edited and some progress on top of that. I figured, I would get one final read through of those chapters and then start working on new chapters.
Fuck, if that happened.
There’s a list of excuses as to why work on it halted, but really, it just boils down to: April was shit show. First, my mom got a puppy. I’m staying with her while I’m at work, which means, I get to share in this puppy (she’s adorable and I love her little soul to pieces). But suddenly, I was dealing with a toddler, whose bites are brutal and who has absolutely no manners (that’s just like all toddlers, right?). Anyway, that was very distracting. Add on still working full-time, a brief flu bug and some serious anxiety and almost no writing got done.
Yeah, that doesn’t bode well, does it?
Well, I’m actually tempted to call April a win. See, I didn’t make my goal of 150 pages, (I ended up lowering my goal to 100, and then barely scraping past that), but I did get past the part that was already edited, made some minor changes (again), renumbered my chapters (again). But most importantly, coming into May? I’m working again! So, I think it was a successful month. With only one serious melt-down – sorry to the critique partners who dealt with that, you know who you are and you're amazing for talking me down and being such a great support system. 100 million times thank you.
More importantly, I’m actually starting to feel sort of confident about these chapters. I know the goal has always been to get this book ready to query, but I’ve never before been at a place where I could realistically see doing that soon (my soon is like a year from now lol). Now, there’s a long way to go still (like 80% of a book to still get through). But I have an idea of my destination now, and a better idea of what it’s going to take to get there.
So, all in all, good camp.
